1970 Series 2 OTS (JH)

This late in production Series 2 OTS will be converted to RHD, fully commissioned and handed over as a driving car ready for the customer to improve over time.
13th May 2016

Passed the MOT with no advisories so it is on with the next stage of getting it registered.

29th April 2016

We now have the bonnet fitted and all the electrics checked out - ready for MOT!

22nd April 2016

We prepared the car for starting FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 1979(!) which means a lot of work checking everything is ready.  The fuel sump was full of crud (the tank has been dipped, sealed and powder coated).  The distributor was stripped and rebuilt and we had a carb leaking so that had to be taken apart.  (While we were doing this, Murray replaced the gearstick gaitor and then tidied up and cleaned the interior).  We never connect the carbs until we have pumped clean fuel through the lines so when this was done, we were ready.  The video at the end of these photos shows the result.  Really pleased and is a testamony to how good the XK engine is.
22nd February 2016

Murrays job today was doing the final exhaust fitting checks.  The clutch slave cylinder is now fitted and the clutch bled for the first time in over 30 years!

19th February 2016

The clutch slave was removed from the JH car and the adjuster rod cleaned up.  We will have to replace the rod as this is badly pitted.  The slave cylinder looks like something Phil from Time Team would have dug  up!

6th February 2016

Fuel senders usually end up like this one from the Yellow (JH) OTS.  Not having moved for years, they are seized solid.  Luckily, we know how to free them up and get them working perfectly again.

3rd February 2016

The sump is now fitted and the car looks much tidier now.  The newly powder coated and POR sealed fuel tank is in place.  The pickup pipe in the tank was completely blocked (Not surprising really as it had half a tank of fuel in there from 1979).  Pre exhaust fitting checks revealed a stud had been replaced with a thin bolt and some threads are stripped so we will be replacing the studs in the manifolds.
26th January 2016

Busy week again (already) and the sump has been removed.  Bearing in mind the car had been off the road since 1979, the contents of the sump weren't... that.... bad.  Murray spent the day cleaning the sump and baffle plate.  Prior to that we removed a shell to check the condition.  Perfectly grey across the shell so that is a relief.  The crank looks fine.
15th January 2016

The powder coating was was completed quickly - huge thanks to Nick and the team at Full Range Finishing for another great job.  We have replaced the driveshaft UJs, roller bearings, wheel bearings, anti roll bar and drop link bushes (poly), outer fulchrum bearings, cradle mounts and changed diff for a 3.31.   Leon built it all up and he and Murray got it installed the same day.  It is now on the ramp having the final bolting up of propshaft, radius arms etc completed.  The brake lines are now installed along with the new servo.  Next week should see the brakes bled and wiring completed.
7th January 2016

The rear axle has now been stripped and all parts delivered for powder coating or rebuilding.  The wiring loom is going in so we should get that complete by the end of next week as well.
23rd December 2015

New uprated engine and steering rack mounts fitted, engine stabiliser and electronic fuel pump installed (note how a PO had fitted it around the wrong way previously!).
12th December 2015

RHS mudguard rubber fitted and upgraded otter switch.
10th December 2015

Radiator and fans built, checked and installed.
1st December 2015

The Yellow S2 OTS (JH) carbs are off ready for rebuilding, the tank is out and you can see the debris at the bottom.  The tank will go for dipping, powder coating and finally sealing with POR15.  The pedal box is now in place and new hoses installed.  Just waiting for the new wiring loom to complete.
28th November 2015

The fuel tank is out and the photo shows how remarkably sound the boot floor is.  The car was last registered in 1979 and the evidence we have seen from the fuel tank contents, I would agree!  The carbs have been removed for rebuilding.  Rebuilt pedal box with cranked over pedals, new return springs and master cylinders installed.
24th November 2015

The front end complete with the exception of the pedal box.  When the new master cylinders arrive tomorrow, that will be rebuilt with the newly cranked pedals.  The rear axle was removed ready for a diff swap and full build.  The front oil seal needs to be replaced so we will be removing the sump in due course.
21st November 2015

We have bondaprimed the area under the battery tray as this area is susceptible to rusting when the battery leaks.  A new steering lower UJ has been fitted and the brake calipers ready to go on the uprights that have been stripped and cleaned.  The hubs now have their new discs fitted.
13th November 2015

We seem to have been replacing a lot of ball joints this week.  We favour fitting the sealed for life lowers and the upgraded, nylon bushed tops if the originals can't be shimmed.  This car) was first to be worked on and you can see the condition of the upper and lowers.  We also stripped and prepared the front calipers for new pistons and seals.
8th November 2015

Hood and frame removed along with the seats.  This gave us the opportunity to look at the original interior.  Really pleased with the condition and after a quick clean, it looks great.

2nd November 2015

More work during the week with the major strip down complete.  Wiring loom, steering rack, dashboards are now all out.  Brake calipers removed for refurbing.  The car has been off the road since 88 so it is pretty grubby in the engine bay.

23rd October 2015

Work has finally started on this project.
